Today I went to the Weggeefwinkel in Leuven and I loved the experience! Weggeefwinkel translates as the Free Shop and the concept is very simple: you give some things you dont need and you take home as many things as you want from the shop, no money involved. The picture above shows all the things I "bought". Everything is in really good shape and for instance the scarf and the white sandals -very 40s style ;) - are unworn. The people working there were very friendly and they sort the goods in categories, fold them and hang the clothes. I was amazed of how clean things were.

This is what their Facebook page says:

Translation (not very accurate since my Dutch is not so good):

You can choose an object here (or a few) and leave some stuff that you think can do someone else a favor.

The aim is to share, abundance and togetherness, protect the environment and ... to bring joy to others.

The stuff that has been untouched for years in your closet, things you never use or gifts which you dont like. There is good news: you can make someone else happy!

Bring them inside the free shop (circuit principle) and contribute to this initiative, which benefits everybody.

Anyone can pick something. For a loved one, for himself, or even, why not? for a stranger.

You may come as often as you want! You do not need to bring anything in order to take something home!!

If you live in Leuven or nearby dont hesitate to pass by. Me? Can´t wait for the next one!

Would you like to embrace vintage clothing but don’t know how? Here are 5 subtle ways to add a touch of vintage style to any outfit win your closet.

There are different styles, so you have you to decide the shape first. I am cat-eye glasses lover but there are other styles like the 40s horn rimmed or the big sixties sunnies a la Jackie O. This is a really easy way of adding some retro twist to your outfit. eBay is a great resource for sunglasses and there is a considerable amount of online shops devoted to retro frames. You can also get your mom´s or grandma´s old glasses and get the cristals replaced.

Vintage silk scarves can be easily found in thrift shops or vintage markets. I have several and they are not expensive at all. You can wear them as scarves around your neck, but they also work as a belts, on your hair or hanging from your handbag.

One easy way to introduce to some vintage pieces in your daily outfits is by wearing smart separates - dresses are more difficult to pull off-. One key piece is a pencil skirt since it´s a classic that is appropiate for any era. You can buy cheap old ladies suits and keep the pencil skirts and perhaps wear the jackets with jeans or pants. The key is finding a skirt that fits and with the right lenght, above or below the knee (not longer, not shorter).

Liquid eyeliner can immediately change you look. Learning how to apply can be tricky, but practice makes perfect. The thing I love the most about liquid eyeliner is that I dont have to over-make up my eyes because the line is enough. With some practice you´ll get the perfect "Italian eyes" look.

In my opinion, every woman should have at least one red lipstick shade in her make up case. Red can be worn during the day and at night. Red is flattering and feminine but you need to look for a shade that compliments your skin tone.

Go for vintage earrings, handbags and brooches. Grandmas are good sources for these or simply vintage shops. Start with wearing simple pieces and add a special touch with the accesories. For example, an LBD with statement vintage earrings or a blazer with a nice brooch.

Busca zarcillos, bolsos y broches vintage.

You can determine how far you want to go by getting a great hairdo. 40s and 50s hairstyles are big statements but you can start with beehives and Bardot/messy hair or classic french twist. Hairstyling may seem daunting but I went from not knowing how to untangle my hair to Victory Rolls and bumper bangs. All you need is practice. Do you see yourself adding some vintage touches to your outfits?

¿Te ves a tí misma añadiendo algunos toques vintage a tus atuendos?

As you may already know, I live in Belgium in a university town and bikes are very popular around here. I have my own -thanks to Tine- and it comes very handy when I go shopping around town. February is too cold to bike -at least for me- so Im not using it as often as Id like to. Spring is coming so bike season begins for me again! No puedo esperar.

Im getting prepared for the summer and sport an Anita Ekberg (photo below) style while riding my bike. I already have the white shorts in my closet! While browsing for pictures I came across Steve Rea´s blog called Rides a Bike and realized that he published a coffee table book called Hollywood Rides a Bike./ The book is a collection of 125 vintage photographs of celebrities and their bikes. I ran into this video from the 50s called Assignment: Venezuela. It was sponsored by the Creole Petroleum Company as an attempt to attract Americans to go to work and live in Venezuela. Putting aside the impecable aesthetics of the video (50s at its best!) it portrays a developing country in which foreigners feel welcomed because people would make sure they did, with an evolving economy and perfect weather. Americans were not afraid of feeling like outsiders since they had access to all the American products and comfort/ Me encontré con este video de los años 50 llamado Asignación: Venezuela.

It´s really cool to see actual footage from the era and trying to spot the buildings that still survive in the cities. Caracas and Maracaibo were examples of the development of the country in matters of infraestructure and technology. The video makes you believe that progress was an unstoppable force during those days. However, it is to be noted that Marcos Pérez Jiménez was the President back then. It means that progress (public works and development of industries) happened on the expense of repression and the supression of the opposition, Pérez Jiménez was a dictator which means things were not as simple as they are portrayed on the video. If you are interested in the 50s or Venezuelan history it is worth seeing.../Es realmente genial ver imágenes reales de la época y tratar de detectar los edificios que aún sobreviven en las ciudades. While I was writing this post, the President of Venezuela,Hugo Chávez died after being diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and undergoing a series of treatments in Cuba. I don´t vote, I acknowledge he did many things for the country and its people but on the other hand, I resent many of his actions. So I´m in between. It really gets me to see people attacking each other and it is a reality that he left behind a devided country. I guess he died and I still dont know what to think about him. He will always be a mistery to me but I have to admit that the world will be a less interesting place without him. He fought for the unification of Latinamerica, stood up against the bigest names in politics but at times his actions seemed ridiculous and went against any rational thinking. A character like him is not born every decade and even though our country is far from being that americanized tropical paradise shown in the video, he left behind a country in which people are more politically involved than ever and every person has a saying. The elections will be held in a month and after having the same president since 1998 it is definetely time for a change, a new head of state/Mientras estaba escribiendo este post, el presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, murió después de ser diagnosticado con cáncer en 2011 y de ser sometido a una serie de tratamientos en Cuba.

I´ve been asked different kinds of questions regarding my style and it is simply difficult to answer when you feel the rest do not "get it". I come from a very homogeneous country where most girls want to look like the Kardashians and now I live in a country in which make up and dressing up is not the rule. It is undeniable that both this aspects have an influence on the way I look but on the other hand, I find my ways to separate myself from whats around me.

Here in Belgium, and in Venezuela, it can be difficult to be yourself. We have magazines, television shows, and even friends telling us what we should look like and what is more accepted. My problem is that if I pick up a magazine, the women shown there are not like me. I also must admit that I've always had a soft spot for fur trimmings and color -especially red that now has a political connotation in Venezuela- but until a few years ago, told myself it was wrong not to enjoy clothes that I like.

As I said I like fur, wellies, silly patterns and headpieces. Those things might not be the latest fashion magazine trends but in my little world of summer dresses all year round, they look good. My interest for vintage clothes comes from refusing to wearing skinny jeans and ugg boots with the excuse of staying warm. It is undeniable how glamourous women looked in the bygone eras and that´s something I try to emulate.

It can be hard sometimes. Firstable because it is a lot of work and second, because you´ll have to learn to deal with people staring at you if you're a bit different from everyone else. But if you want to wear ruffles and colors in the winter, do it! Do it sometimes or do it everyday! I try to think that I´m building my own style, and so should you...clothes are not merely protection or a layer to cover our naked bodies, you can make a statement with them, hve fun with them or as I do, create a fantasy world in which I juggle with the midcentury lifestyle and the modern world.

The reactions are not always negative, I always get approached by older women and I get smiles of approval. My friends understand that I´ve never been a very conventional Venezuelan and sometimes people on the streets look amused by my looks. So, my conclusion is whatever it is you like, do it. I think that at least when I grow older, Ill have nothing to regret when it comes to my sartorial choices, no matter how silly they may look for other people, because I´m having fun while I do it.

German actress Marlene Dietrich is considered to be one of the most glamourous actresses of all time. She had many beauty secrets but most of them are very dated e.g. her drawing her eyebrows with khol in the 30s fashion. One secret that can be easily adapted to our times is not using mascara on the lower lashes. She believed it cast a shadow and made her look tired and I agree.

The American actress, later real life Princess, Grace Kelly was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her makeup secret was just shadowing her eyebrows and using two shades of blushes on her cheeks to give the illusion of more depth (a lighter tone over the bone, and a darker shade in the hollows). I personally recommend using a pencil or shadow in dark brown for most hair colors and dark grey for black hair, never black. The key is two tones darker for blondes and two tones lighter for dark hair/La actriz, después princesa Grace Kelly, era considerada una de las mujeres más bellas del mundo.

Marilyn Monroe allegedly invented lip gloss as we know it today. She realized she looked better on screen when her lips looked wet so she combined lipstick, beeswax, and Vaseline. Her invention was later passed on from her make-up people to the cosmetic companies. You can easily do the same by using the lipstick of your choice and adding a layer of Vaseline on top/ Marilyn Monroe supuestamente inventó el brillo de labios como lo conocemos hoy en día. Carole Lombard (AKA Mrs.Gable) learned to be a master of make-up and came up with the idea of painting a straight white line down her nose to eliminate the hook look and then applied her make-up over it. This technique was copied by her make-up artists, so that the method was often used on other actresses´ noses.

I know its a bit late for this post but I think most people dont know about it. Belgium is so unique that they even have their own version of Santa Claus! His name is Sinterklaas and he doesnt come from the North Pole but from Spain and he´s a got a helper (o helpers) called Zwarte Piet.

Originally, the feast celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas – patron saint of children, sailors, philatelists, and the city of Amsterdam, among others. Sint Nicholas being a bishop and this geographical spread make clear that the feast in this form has a Roman Catholic background, although the papacy has never officially recognized his existence/Originalmente, la fiesta se celebra el dia de San Nicolás - santo patrón de los niños, marineros, filatelistas y la ciudad de Amsterdam, entre otros.

The arrival of Sinterklaas into town its a huge event and it is broadcast on national television. Numerous people dress as Zwarte Pieten in various cities and towns across the the country. Traditionally their faces are blackened because Zwarte Piet is a Spanish (Moorish) servant of Sinterklaas (though some people said Zwarte Piet was originally a slave who, when Sinterklaas bought him his freedom, was so grateful that he stayed to assist him). Today, sometimes the more politically correct explanation that Pete's face is "black from soot" (as Pete has to climb through chimneys to deliver his gifts) is used/La llegada de San Nicolás en la ciudad es un evento enorme y que se emite en la televisión nacional.

For Belgian children, it is customary to put one shoe in front of the fireplace, sing Sinterklaas songs and go to bed. They leave a carrot and sugar cubes in the shoe as a treat for Sinterklaas' horse. The next morning the carrot is gone and the children find candy or a small present in their shoes. Drawings made by the children are put into the shoes as a present to Sinterklaas. Some leave a bottle of beer for Zwarte Piet and a cup of coffee for Sinterklaas/Los niños belgas, acostumbran a poner un zapato en frente de la chimenea, cantar canciones Sinterklaas e ir a la cama.

Sinterklaas replaces Christmas as a gift-giving occasion and it is amazing that the American traditions and globalization havent hit this part of the world, where the Sint is still popular. I got to see him in the streets of Leuven and I was as excited as any of the kids in the parade.

This year I decided to add some Xmas spirit to my little place. I went to a second hand shop here in Leuven called Spit to buy cheap and silly items for my room. I bought a christmas tree in the center and used the decoration that my friend Simon left when he went back to Canada. Here´s the result, although I have a small cross stitchng project in mind ;)/Este año he decidido añadir un poco de espíritu de Navidad a mi pequeño lugar.

What I did (not to spend a lot of money):

-I bought some things in a second hand shop > cheap

-Used old things with new things, for example: the light blue bird is not a christmas accent but I used it anyway.

-Find things with a sense of humor, like the Happy New Year garland in German or the cheesy Xmas mugs.

Mary Quant went to the mod-immersed streets of London where men and women were pushing the boundaries of fashion and it was there where she decided to demostrate how sexy miniskirts could be. It´s important to remember that fashion in the 60s was also used as a way to express that they had their own voices and the mini skirt was revolutionary, an icon of rebellion./ Mary Quant fue a las calles de Londres que estaban inmersas con el mod y donde mujeres y hombres empujaron los limites de la moda y fue ahí mismo donde ella decidió demostrar cuan sexy podía ser la minifalda.

I always secretly wanted to be a flight attendant. I dreamed about traveling around the globe perfectly attired but I was not skinny enough, tall enough, etc... I came across this picture on Jessica´s blog, Chronically Vintage, and it inspired me to think about the requirements for flight attendants in the past and now.

The show Pan Am has also sparked my imagination and I asked myself if its really depicting the role of a stewardess back in the 60s. I read an article in which one former flight attendant explains that the pre-flight weigh-ins and grooming inspections depicted on the show were true-to-life (including the girdle check).

The industry has changed and stewardesses are now known as cabin crew or flight attendants. The traveling experience is not the same (for better or worse), i.e. luggage restrictions, non smoking policies, high security standards, tracksuit wearers flooding airports, overbookings, crocs, long queues and low budget airlines. The postive side of this is that traveling is more accesible now than it has ever been but were lacking of the adventurous and glamourous aspect fo traveling and the VIP treatment that passengers used to receive.
However, I found the American Airlines Image Standards from 2011 and to be honest requirements havent changed that much. Low budget airlines like Ryanair or Easy Jet have completely different standards and lets say that flight attendants dont look so well put-together as they should.
Virgin Airlines has the hottest flight attendants according to several polls and their secret is they understand that image is part of their costumer service. They have hairdressers and stylists to train the cabin crew and they have a manual that looks more like a magazine than a brochure. And, They finish the whole look with red lips and matching red pumps.

My beloved Dita Von Teese was the face of Virgin Airlines.

After reading a couple of articles what I´ve learned from them is/ Después de leer un par de artículos lo que aprendí fue:

- Exfoliate the night before you fly and apply a heavy moisturizer in-flight.

-Apply bronzer with a small brush. A big brush means you can't control the product, and you could end up with it all over your collar. Same goes for blush. If it's too big, your face will look flushed rather than glowing/ Aplicate el bronceador con una brocha pequeña.

—If you can't rub your cuticles with oil daily, every time you put some lip balm on, place some around your nails to keep them soft and pliable/ Si no puedes poner aceite en tus cutículas todos los días, cada vez que que te pongas bálsamo en los labios, ponte un poco sobre tus uñas. Las mantendrá suaves y flexibles.

—Put your fragrance on before your jewelry—or your wet perfume could corrode it/ Ponte la fragancia antes que la bisutería- o tu perfume la corroerá.

—Stop static by rubbing a wire coat hanger over your clothes and your hair. (What? Really? We have to try this one to see if it really works.)/ Evita la estática al pasarte un gancho de ropa sobre tu ropa y cabello. (En serio? Esto hay que probarlo).

-Red lips suit every skin color- It´s just a matter of finding the right shade for you-/ Los labios rojos quedan bien con cualquier color de piel.

This commercial from Virgin might be taking the word hot to a different level and it´s even considered sexist but they´re definitely using their reputation to attract costumers...
The last few days have been crazy: finishing my lease and my studies, 2 weeks in Veenzuela and back to sign a new contract and start a new program in Antwerp. Moving in and out has been pretty stressful since I had no idea how many things I had and how difficult it was going to be to find a decent place to live in Leuven for under 500 euros per month. Leuven is getting more and more expensive every year and also more popular with international students. After going house-hunting with my friend Laura, she found a place right in thr center of the city. The winter is coming so less biking and more suffering with the cold and the rain so it was essential to find a good location. The place needed a lot of cleaning and scrubing but here I am all moved in after a week of hard work. There are plenty of things that could be in better conditions but just the location erases all my complaints.

I´m certainly not an expert at dating vintage clothes but I´ve read a lot about it and I´ve learned useful tips, so I compiled a few rules to help you out next time you go on a thrifting adventure. Garage sales, vintage shops, street markets, charity shops and even your grandma´s closet are good resources for vintage clothes but it seems like 80s/90s clothes are the most common to be found.

Look for a metal zipper, with a flat large pull and large teeth. Sometimes zippers were painted to match the color of the dress. Keep in mind that before the late fifties, zippers were considered “sexually explicit” and were not used before then. A metal or aluminum zipper is usually a good indicator that you found a pre-1960s garment while nylon zippers are usually 60s and onward.
The location is also important: Zippers were usually put in the side seams of dresses, skirts and pants from the late 50s til the early 60s. From the 60s and onward, zippers were mostly used in the center back of dresses and skirts and the center front of pants. But, Remember that zippers can easily be replaced so look for other hints/ Mira si el cierre es de metal, con el pasador grande y plano y con dientes grandes.

Best way to know if a garment is vintage or not is looking at the label (without the exception of hand-made items). Vintage tags are home-made looking mostly stiched (and not screen printed)and they obviously look aged. Pay attention to washing care instructions. If your garment has a washing care label then it´s an item for the 70s and onward because these tags were only made compulsory in the 1970s in the UK and US and later everywhere else in the world.
But if you can read the label-name on your dress’s tag, google it!

Also one good way to point out vintage clothes is to turn it inside out and check the seams. Many vintage-dresses don’t have lining because back in the day women wore more underdresses and slips therefore linings weren’t needed. In 20s, 30′s 40′s and even on 50′s many clothes were made by individual seamstresses ( specially in Venezuela/South America). Clothing industry wasn’t that big yet and they were expensive. Also industrial type of overlock machines were not much used yet. It wasn’t until 1960′s when overlock machines/sergers for home use were developed. That’s why many vintage clothes have only zigzag stitch on seam edges or even handsewn edging/ Otra buena manera de determinar si es verdaderamente ropa vintage o no es volteando la prenda y ver las costuras.

Most 40s and 50s items are made or rayon, cotton, wool or linen. It wasn’t until the 1960s and 70s that polyester (first known as Dacro) became common. Additionally, spandex was not invented until 1959 and was not commonly used until the 70s and 80s. Additionally, elastic was not often used in waists. Keep in mind that clothes were mainly homemade and therefore custom made so elastic waists were not necessary. You’ll find a handful of 1960s and 70s dresses with elastic, but it usually means the item is from the 80s or later.
Take a look at the colors. Are they pastel with geometric patterns? Probably 80s. Are they bold neons with hippie flowers? 60s. Is it classy and elegant? 40s -50s. Belgian summer has a reputation, and not a good one. I guess the weather gods smiled at me again cause this has been the best summer of the last few years but 30 something degrees in a country like Belgium means being outside as much as possible cause A/Cs are not common around here. People keep telling me that I must be adapted to this weather but truth is, Maracaibo is the coldest city in Venezuela (old joke..A/C everywhere).

Me and my friends from Spain decided to go to Rotselaar where there´s a lake with cold water to freshen up. The bus ride takes 15mins (aprox.) plus a 10 mins walk but it is worth it! The road was beautiful, green and there is a very beautiful old tower that looks like the ones in fairytales. I dont have a camera at the moment, so I could take a picture of it but thanks to Victor I have a few photos to share. My friends found my sunglasses kind of funny but Maria tried them on and they suit her! They even matched her swimsuit. That´s all for now, back to studying for an upcoming test. Wish me luck... I must have posted these pics a while ago. Ive been busy studying and I cannot update the blog very often. I went to Viena a couple of months ago and I discovered a small but beautiful city. Sadly, it didnt stop raining so most of my pictures were not that good. Here are a few that I selected...

I love Belgian Summer! Happy, easy, sunny days. People behave differently, look better and smile more. People are taking holidays and going to festivals like there´s no tomorrow! I went to the Ieper Hardcore Fest and had the chance to see bands that I like, have yummy vegan food and meeting new people. The festival had a More than Music tent where the bdas were intwerviewed and there were workshops about veganism, animal liberation and other issues, a zine libray, among other things. There was also a Merch Tent. I bought this book: Sober living for the Revolution by Gabriel Kuhn./ Me encanta el verano en Bélgica! Había también una carpa de mercancía donde compré este libro: Sober Living for the Revolution por Gabriel Kuhn.

I´ve been busy studying and working but I started reading guess who is the first interviewee? Ian McKaye! (Minor Threat/Fugazi). I´ll tell you how it went later on but I´m very interested in the role women played in the Hardcore scene and that´s one topic that will be covered by the book.Stay tuned! Bomb Girls is a Canadian television drama set in the 1940s. It was originally a six-part drama, but was turned into a full series/ Bomb Girls is una serie dramática de la televisión canadiense.

Bomb Girls tells the remarkable stories of the women who risked their lives in a munitions factory in Toronto building bombs for the Allied forces fighting on the European front.
I really enjoy period books and movies, so I enjoyed it a lot and I can´t wait to see what´s happening in season 2. The show potraits the turbulent 40s, a difficult time with World War II raging in Europe and over the Pacific and in Asia and a time in which women weren’t exactly treated as equals. The music and the wardrobe are good enough, although I think they could´ve done a better job with the hairstyling and the hems very a bit too short at times. Putting that aside, the show is entertaining and you get to learn a little bt about the life in the factories.

the laughing gnome. hard to spot in the center of bratislava there´s a gnome with a big penis. The story tells that two men were competing for the love of a woman and they built one house each. The woman chose in the end and the winner put the statue as a reminder to other man that he won.

The Building of Slovak radio is a building in Bratislava. It is shaped like an inverted pyramid. Architects of this project were Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič and Barnabáš Kissling and it was completed in 1983. The building is 80 metres high and has a concert hall with a large concert organ. The first test broadcast was made in 1984 and regular broadcasting began on 27 March 1985(wikipedia)

The Church of St. Elisabeth (Slovak: Kostol svätej Alžbety, Hungarian: Szent Erzsébet templom), commonly known as Blue Church (Modrý kostolík, Kék templom), is a Hungarian Secessionist (Jugendstil) Catholic church located in the eastern part of the Old Town in Bratislava, Slovakia. It is consecrated to Elisabeth of Hungary, daughter of Andrew II, who grew up in the Pressburg Castle (pozsonyi vár). It is called "Blue Church" because of the colour of its façade, mosaics, majolicas and blue-glazed roof (wikipedia). It´s very pretty and to me it looks like a giant cake with fondant.

What can I say about Bratislava? well...it is the capital of Slovakia and it is the biggest city in that small country. I had the impression that that´s where East meets West and they are tryng to find their own identity.

Bratislava is very tourist friendly, easy to move around and there are quirky details everywhere you go. I felt like I needed to open my eyes a bit more and pay attention to details cause if not i would miss out of a lot of things. I probably met the right people and that helped, cause i left believing that Bratislava is full of friendly people.

Not so many people speak English but they make an effort to communicate and if they cant, they even apologize for it.i heard of people getting robbed and pickpockets but I didnt feel in danger. Prices are around the same as in Budapest and as it is expected, inn the touristic areas prices are higher.
I took so many pictures so it was hard to choose, here are few/ No mucha gente habla inglés pero hacen el esfuerzo para comunicarse y si no pueden, inclusive se disculpan.

I followed this tutorial and although it says its a Marilyn tutorial, the result is more Ditaish to me.
