My vintage guide to Belgium - Weggeefwinkel Leuven ( Huisje van Overvloed )

Today I went to the Weggeefwinkel in Leuven and I loved the experience! Weggeefwinkel translates as the Free Shop and the concept is very simple: you give some things you dont need and you take home as many things as you want from the shop, no money involved. The picture above shows all the things I "bought". Everything is in really good shape and for instance the scarf and the white sandals -very 40s style ;) - are unworn. The people working there were very friendly and they sort the goods in categories, fold them and hang the clothes. I was amazed of how clean things were.

Je kan hier kosteloos een object uitkiezen (of enkele) en zelf spulletjes achterlaten waarvan je denkt dat je er iemand anders een plezier mee kan doen.Bedoeling is overvloed te delen, samenhorigheid en sociale contacten te versterken, het milieu te sparen en ... vreugde te brengen! 

Wie kent dat niet? Van die spulletjes die al jaren onaangeroerd in of op de kast staan, zaken waaraan je gehecht bent maar die je nooit gebruikt of cadeautjes waar je niets mee bent. Er is goed nieuws: je kan er iemand anders blij mee maken!!

Breng ze binnen in de weggeefwinkel (kringloopprincipe) en bouw mee aan dit initiatief waar iedereen beter van wordt . 

Iedereen kan iets uitkiezen. Voor een geliefde, voor zichzelf, of zelfs -waarom niet- voor een wildvreemde. Kijk thuis ook even rond of er iets is dat je zelf graag aan iemand anders schenkt. 

Je mag zo vaak komen als je wilt! Je hoeft niets binnen te brengen, om spulletjes mee naar huis te nemen!!!

You can choose an object here (or a few) and leave some stuff that you think can do someone else a favor. 

The aim is to share, abundance and togetherness, protect the environment and ... to bring joy to others.

The stuff that has been untouched for years in your closet, things you never use or gifts which you dont like. There is good news: you can make someone else happy! 

Bring them inside the free shop (circuit principle) and contribute to this initiative, which benefits everybody. 

Anyone can pick something. For a loved one, for himself, or even, why not? for a stranger. 

You may come as often as you want! You do not need to bring anything in order to take something home!! 

If you live in Leuven or nearby dont hesitate to pass by. Me? Can´t wait for the next one!

Hollywood (also) Rides a Bike

As you may already know, I live in Belgium in a university town and bikes are very popular around here. I have my own -thanks to Tine- and it comes very handy when I go shopping around town. February is too cold to bike -at least for me- so Im not using it as often as Id like to. Spring is coming so bike season begins for me again! I cant wait/ Como ustedes ya saben, yo vivo en Bélgica en una ciudad universitaria y las bicicletas son muy populares por aquí. Tengo la mía -gracias a Tine-y viene muy bien cuando voy de compras por la ciudad. Febrero es demasiado frío para andar en bicicleta, por lo menos para mí, así que no la estoy usando tan a menudo como me gustaría. La primavera está llegando así que la temporada de bicicletas comienza para mí otra vez! No puedo esperar.

Im getting prepared for the summer and sport an Anita Ekberg (photo below) style while riding my bike. I already have the white shorts in my closet! While browsing for pictures I came across Steve Rea´s blog called Rides a Bike and realized that he published a coffee table book called Hollywood Rides a Bike./ The book is a collection of 125 vintage photographs of celebrities and their bikes. Check his blog and be inspired to start biking!/Me estoy preparando para el verano y usar un estilo tipo Anita Ekberg (foto de abajo), mientras uso mi bici. Ya tengo los shorts blancos en mi armario! Buscando imágenes me encontré con el blog de Steve Rea llamado Rides a Bike y me di cuenta de que él publicó un libro llamado Hollywood Rides a Bike. El libro es una colección de 125 fotografías de época de los famosos y sus bicicletas. Chequea su blog e inspírate para empezar a pedalear!

The last few days have been crazy: finishing my lease and my studies, 2 weeks in Veenzuela and back to sign a new contract and start a new program in Antwerp. Moving in and out has been pretty stressful since I had no idea how many things I had and how difficult it was going to be to find a decent place to live in Leuven for under 500 euros per month. Leuven is getting more and more expensive every year and also more popular with international students. After going house-hunting with my friend Laura, she found a place right in thr center of the city. The winter is coming so less biking and more suffering with the cold and the rain so it was essential to find a good location. The place needed a lot of cleaning and scrubing but here I am all moved in after a week of hard work. There are plenty of things that could be in better conditions but just the location erases all my complaints.

Los últimos días han sido la locura: terminar los estudios y el contrato, 2 semanas en Venezuela y de vuelta a firmar otro contrato y empezar otro programa en Amberes. Mudarme ha sido bastante estresante ya que no tenia idea de la cantidad de cosas que tenia y ni de lo difícil que seria encontrar un lugar decente donde vivir en Lovaina por menos de 500 euros por mes. Me fui a buscar casa con mi amiga Laura y ella me encontró este lugar justo en el centro de la ciudad. Ya viene el invierno lo que significa menos bici y mas sufrimiento con la lluvia y el frío, así que era necesario encontrar un lugar bien ubicado. El lugar necesitaba bastante limpieza pero aquí estoy ya mudada después de ua semana de mucho trabajo. Todavía hay cosas con las que no estoy contenta pero a decir verdad la ubicación borra todas mis quejas.

Rotselaar Lake + 30 something degrees

Belgian summer has a reputation, and not a good one. I guess the weather gods smiled at me again cause this has been the best summer of the last few years but 30 something degrees in a country like Belgium means being outside as much as possible cause A/Cs are not common around here. People keep telling me that I must be adapted to this weather but truth is, Maracaibo is the coldest city in Venezuela (old joke..A/C everywhere). El verano belga tiene una reputación que no es precisamente buena. Me imagino que los dioses del tiempo me sonrieron otra vez porque este ha sido el mejor veranos de los últimos años,pero más de 30 grados en un país como Bélgica significa estar afuera lo más que se pueda porque los aires acondicionados no son comunes por acá. La gente me sigue diciendo que debo estar acostumbrada a este clima pero la verdad es que Maracaibo es la ciudad más fría de Venezuela (chiste viejo).

 Me and my friends from Spain decided to go to Rotselaar where there´s a lake with cold water to freshen up. The bus ride takes 15mins (aprox.) plus a 10 mins walk but it is worth it! The road was beautiful, green and there is a very beautiful old tower that looks like the ones in fairytales. I dont have a camera at the moment, so I could take a picture of it but thanks to Victor I have a few photos to share. Mis amigos de España y yo decidimos irnos a Rotselaar donde hay un lago con agua fría para refrescarnos. El bus tarda como 15 mins. más la caminata de 10 mins pero vale la pena! El camino es muy bonito, todo verde y hay una vieja torre bellisima que parece de cuentos de hadas. No tengo cámara ahora pero gracias a Victor tengo unas poquitas fotos para compartir. 

 

My friends found my sunglasses kind of funny but Maria tried them on and they suit her! They even matched her swimsuit. That´s all for now, back to studying for an upcoming test. Wish me luck... A mis amigos le parecieron mis lentes un poco graciosos pero María se los probó y le quedaban super bien. Hasta le combinaban con el traje de baño. Esto es todo por ahora, y de vuelta a los libros porque tengo un examen pronto. Deseenme suerte...

A school trip to Arenberg Castle

Im using some pictures I had in my camera for days and weeks to finish the posts of 2011 and start fresh with the 2012 ones. Estoy usando fotos que teia en mi camara por dias y semanas para finalizar los posts del 2011 y empezar fresca con los del 2012.

As part of my art history class, the architecture professor took us to The Arenberg Castle. It is located in the outskirts of Leuven, in Heverlee. The site had been the castle of the lords of Heverlee since the 12th century, but this family became impoverished and had to sell it in 1445 to the Croÿ family from Picardy. Willem van Croÿ completed some restoration works on the castle in 1515, and founded a monastery on the castle grounds for the Benedictine Ceslestines. Como parte de mi clase de historia del arte, mi profesora de arquitectura nos llevo al Castillo de Arenberg que queda en las afueras de Lovaina, en Heverlee. Este ha sido el castillo de los lords de Heverlee desde el siglo XII pero la familia empobreció y tuvo que venderlo en 1445 a los Croy de Picardy. Willem van Croy completo unos trabajos de reconstrucción en el castillo y fundo un monasterio en los terrenos del castillo para las Benedictas Celestinas.

The architectural style is in large part traditionally Flemish, with sandstone window frames and brick walls, though it has been structurally altered since 1515 and has elements of Gothic, Renaissance and Neo Gothic architecture and it is today what my teacher calls a patchwork. El estilo arquitectónico es en gran parte tradicionalmente flamenco, con algunas ventanas con marcos arenisca y paredes de ladrillo aunque ha sido alterado estructuralmente desde 1515 y tiene elementos de arquitectura gótica, renacentista y neo gótica y es ahora lo que mi profesora llama un trabajo lleno de parches. 

Charles III of Croy was the 4th and last duke, and after his death without issue the castle passed to the Arenberg family into which his sister had married, and remained in that family until the First World War. Charles III de Croy fue el 4to y ultimo duque y después de su muerte en sin discusión el castillo paso a la familia Arenberg el cual su hermana se había casado y permaneció en la familia hasta la Primera Guerra Mundial.

The first manned gas-filled balloon flight in history took off from the front lawn of the castle on November 21, 1783; the balloonist was professor Jan Pieter Minckeleers. El primer vuelo de un globo de gas tripulado despego desde el cesped frontal del castillo el 21 noviembre de 1783, por el profesor Jan Pieter Minckeleers.

In 1921 the castle was sold to the Catholic University of Leuven, becoming the engineering campus. The building is open to the public. The former Celestine monastery now houses the campus library, and the addresses of many of the science buildings are on the street named,Celestijnlaan.

I found these tweed pants in a vintage shop here in Leuven. They very warm and since I bought them during sales, it was super cheap./encontre estos pantalones en una tienda vintage aca en Lovaina y como los compre durante las rebajas me salieron muy baratos...ah y son bien calentitos.

we had a double farewell get together: Ana was leaving Leuven for good and Ashtgar went to Italy for a while. We went to la Vecchia Napoli, the only good pizza ive had here in Belgium./ tuvimos una despedida doble: Ana se iba definitivimante de Lovaina y Ahstgar se iba por un rato para Italia. Fuimos a la Vecchia Napoli, la unica pizza buena que me he comido en Belgica.

my friend Giacomo lives in a farm in Leuven...yes in Leuven, but just in the outskirts of the city. he invited me and Giardi to check it out and spend the afternoon with him. the farm has a good vibe, its all artsy and everyone living there must help with some kind of work and Giacomo helps around as well. It was a sunny afternoon and there was some sort of tour going on and they planned activites for the kids, there was a bbq and they have their own bar which means you can just go there and chill..i cant not wait to go there again. Mi amigo Giacomo vive en una granja en Lovaina...si es dificil de creer pero es justo a las afueras de la ciudad. nos invito a mi y a Giardi a darle un vistazo y a pasar la tarde con el. La granja tiene una buena atmosfera y hay arte por todos lados y todos los que viven ahi deben ayudar dde alguna manera asi que Giacomo tambien ayuda. Fue una tarde soleada y habia una especie de tour y planearon actividades para los ninos, habia una parrillada y tienen su propio bar, lo que siginifica que puedes ir y pasarla la tarde tranquilamente alla...estoy loca por volver! organic soda me and Giardi the kids play was performed in dutch...so no clue what it was about..animals maybe? Giacomo and Giardi they grow their own vegetables!/ ellos cultivan sus propios vegetales! the boys fooling around i loved the signs in different languages
