Grooming tips from Flight Attendants

I always secretly wanted to be a flight attendant. I dreamed about traveling around the globe perfectly attired but I was not skinny enough, tall enough, etc... I came across this picture on Jessica´s blog, Chronically Vintage, and it inspired me to think about the requirements for flight attendants in the past and now.

Siempre quise secretamente ser tripulante de cabina. Soñaba con viajar por el mundo perfectamente arreglada pero no era lo suficientemente delgada, alta, entre otras cosas. Encontre esta foto en el blog de Jessica, Chronically Vintage y me inspiró para pensar acerca de los requisitos de las aeromozas en el pasado y en la actualidad. 

The show Pan Am has also sparked my imagination and I asked myself if its really depicting the role of a stewardess back in the 60s. I read an article in which one former flight attendant explains that the pre-flight weigh-ins and grooming inspections depicted on the show were true-to-life (including the girdle check).

El show Pan Am también me ha disparada la imaginación y me he preguntado a mi misma si de verdad retratan el rol de las aeromozas en los 60s. Leí un artículo en el cual una de las ex-empleadas explica que la rutina de pesarlas antes de los vuelos y las inspecciones de que se presentan en el show son verdaderas (incluyendo la revisión de la faja-liguero).

The industry has changed and stewardesses are now known as cabin crew or flight attendants. The traveling experience is not the same (for better or worse), i.e. luggage restrictions, non smoking policies, high security standards, tracksuit wearers flooding airports, overbookings, crocs, long queues and low budget airlines. The postive side of this is that traveling is more accesible now than it has ever been but were lacking of the adventurous and glamourous aspect fo traveling and the VIP treatment that passengers used to receive. However, I found the American Airlines Image Standards from 2011 and to be honest requirements havent changed that much. Low budget airlines like Ryanair or Easy Jet have completely different standards and lets say that flight attendants dont look so well put-together as they should. Virgin Airlines has the hottest flight attendants according to several polls and their secret is they understand that image is part of their costumer service. They have hairdressers and stylists to train the cabin crew and they have a manual that looks more like a magazine than a brochure. And, They finish the whole look with red lips and matching red pumps.

La industria ha cambiado y las aeromozas ahora se conocen como tripulantes de cabina. La experiencia de viajar no es la misma (para mejor o peor), eso quiere decir, restricciones en el equipaje, políticas anti-tabaco, latos estándares de seguridad, gente que usa conjuntos deportivos en el aeropuerto, crocs, sobreventa, largas filas y aerolíneas económicas. Lo positivo de ésto es que el viajar se ha vuelto más accesible pero ahora nos hace falta el aspecto glamouroso y aventurero de viajar y el tratamiento VIP que los pasajeros solían recibir. Sin embargo, Encontré los estandares de imagen de American Airlines del 2011 y debo ser honesta en que los requerimientos no han cambiado mucho. Las aerolínea economicas como Ryanair o Easy Jet tienen estándares completamente diferentes y digamos que no se ven tan arregladas como deberían. Virgin Airlines tiene las aeromozas más atractivas de acuerdo con varias encuestas y su secreto es que entienden que la imagen es parte de su servicio al cliente. Tienen estilistas y peluqueros que entrenan a las tripulantes de cabina y su manual parece mas una revista que un folleto. Completan el look con labios rojos y tacones rojos que combinan.

After reading a couple of articles what I´ve learned from them is/ Después de leer un par de artículos lo que aprendí fue: 

 - Exfoliate the night before you fly and apply a heavy moisturizer in-flight. Exfoliate la noche antes de volar y aplicar un humectante espeso durante el vuelo. 

 -Apply bronzer with a small brush. A big brush means you can't control the product, and you could end up with it all over your collar. Same goes for blush. If it's too big, your face will look flushed rather than glowing/ Aplicate el bronceador con una brocha pequeña. Una brocha grande significa que no se puede controlar el producto, y puedes temrinar con el sobre el cuello. Lo mismo aplica para el blush. Si es muy grande tu cara quedará muy roja en vez de con brillo. 

 —If you can't rub your cuticles with oil daily, every time you put some lip balm on, place some around your nails to keep them soft and pliable/ Si no puedes poner aceite en tus cutículas todos los días, cada vez que que te pongas bálsamo en los labios, ponte un poco sobre tus uñas. Las mantendrá suaves y flexibles.

 —Put your fragrance on before your jewelry—or your wet perfume could corrode it/ Ponte la fragancia antes que la bisutería- o tu perfume la corroerá. 

 —Stop static by rubbing a wire coat hanger over your clothes and your hair. (What? Really? We have to try this one to see if it really works.)/  Evita la estática al pasarte un gancho de ropa sobre tu ropa y cabello. (En serio? Esto hay que probarlo).

 -Red lips suit every skin color- It´s just a matter of finding the right shade for you-/ Los labios rojos quedan bien con cualquier color de piel. Lo importante es conseguir el tono apropiado para ti. 


 This commercial from Virgin might be taking the word hot to a different level and it´s even considered sexist but they´re definitely using their reputation to attract costumers...

I must have posted these pics a while ago. Ive been busy studying and I cannot update the blog very often. I went to Viena a couple of months ago and I discovered a small but beautiful city. Sadly, it didnt stop raining so most of my pictures were not that good. Here are a few that I selected... Debi haber posteado estas fotos hace rato. He estado ocupada estudiando y no he podido acutalizar el blog muy seguido. Fui a Viena hace un par de meses y descubrí una ciudad pequeña pero hermosa. Lo malo fue que no dejó de llover asi que la mayoria de las fotos no me quedaron muy bien. Aca algunas de las seleccionadas.

i wandered around the city with a map and enjoyed the sights.

the laughing gnome. hard to spot in the center of bratislava there´s a gnome with a big penis. The story tells that two men were competing for the love of a woman and they built one house each. The woman chose in the end and the winner put the statue as a reminder to other man that he won. Davin Castle Storage rooms in the outskirts of the city. Its pretty cool that they use them as rehearsal rooms and even for gigs! This is one of the many in the city. The Building of Slovak radio is a building in Bratislava.It is shaped like an inverted pyramid. Architects of this project were Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič and Barnabáš Kissling and it was completed in 1983. The building is 80 metres high and has a concert hall with a large concert organ. The first test broadcast was made in 1984 and regular broadcasting began on 27 March 1985(wikipedia) The Church of St. Elisabeth (Slovak: Kostol svätej Alžbety, Hungarian: Szent Erzsébet templom), commonly known as Blue Church (Modrý kostolík, Kék templom), is a Hungarian Secessionist (Jugendstil) Catholic church located in the eastern part of the Old Town in Bratislava, Slovakia. It is consecrated to Elisabeth of Hungary, daughter of Andrew II, who grew up in the Pressburg Castle (pozsonyi vár). It is called "Blue Church" because of the colour of its façade, mosaics, majolicas and blue-glazed roof (wikipedia). It´s very pretty and to me it looks like a giant cake with fondant. when walking around the city center i met David who has a really cool blog. if you want to check it out. he took pics of my outfit!

Buda y Pest. Parte 2

On my second day in Budapest I went to the Terror Háza or The House of Terror. As I said before, I was interested in the whole communist era history and the museum contains exhibits related to the fascist and communist dictatorial regimes in 20th century Hungary and is also a memorial to the victims of these regimes, including those detained, interrogated, tortured or killed in the building. It is very interesting and so as not to make it boring, they mediatized the museum by including videos, music and lightning effects. Taking photos is now allowed but I managed take a few.../ En mi segundo día en Budapest fui a la Casa del Terror o Terror Háza. Como dije anteriormente me interesa la historia de la era comunista y el museo tiene exhibiciones relacionadas con los regímenes fascista y comunista en la Hungría del siglo XX, es también un memorial para las victimas de estos, incluyendo a quienes fueron detenidos, interrogados, torturados o asesinados en el edificio. Es muy interesante y para no hacerlo aburrido, lo han mediatizado incluyendo videos, música y efectos de iluminación. Tomar fotos no esta permitido pero encontré la manera de tomar unas pocas...

Going to the basement alone was the scariest part, they put me in a dark elevator facing a big screen. On the screen a guy started telling how he executed and tortured people down there, when the doors open, you enter the cells and interrogation rooms. I was scared but mostly sad cause I couldnt help but thinking that real people died in those cells (there were portraits like those shown in the picture). The House of Terror aint the cheapest museum in Budapest but its worth visiting. I left the building feeling really bad, thank god it was sunny cause I really needed some happiness/ Ir al sótano sola fue la parte que mas me dio miedo, me pusieron en un ascensor oscuro enfrentando una pantalla grande. En la pantalla un tipo empieza a contar cómo ejecutaba y torturaba a la gente allí abajo, cuando las puertas se abren, entras a las celdas y a las salas de interrogación. Tenia miedo, pero mas que eso me sentí triste porque no podía evitar pensar en que gente de verdad murió en esas celdas (habían retratos como esos que se ven en la foto). La casa del Terror no es el museo mas barato de Budapest pero vale la pena verlo. Deje el edificio sintiéndome muy mal, menos mal que estaba soleado porque en realidad necesitaba un poco de felicidad. 

Next day; Széchenyi, one of the most famous thermal baths and spas on the Pest side. It was established in 1881 in massive and beautiful yellow building within a park. It was a nice experience and I spent the day with Emmanuelle from CS, not in the pics, and a spanish group of friends from Leuven. Taking pictures is not an easy task with everythng around being wet but I managed to take a few shots. The bath receives its thermal water from the 2nd St. Stephan’s Well and they set pools with different temperatures. I have a very sensitive nose and at the beginning it was very difficult for me to bear with the smell of eggs gone bad :s but i adjusted pretty quickly and going outside was really nice, it was very sunny...oh, and I also got into the saunas!/ Al día siguiente: Széchenyi, uno de los baños termales y spa mas famosos en el lado Pest. Fue establecido en el año 1881 en un edificio gigante y bonito de color amarillo dentro de un parque. Fue una experiencia agradable y pase el día con Emmanuelle de CS, qe no esta en las fotos, y un grupo de amigos españoles de Lovaina. Tomar fotos no es fácil cuando todo alrededor esta mojado pero logre tomar algunas. El baño recibe sus aguas termales del pozo de la calle numero 2, San Esteban y hicieron piscinas con diferentes temperaturas. Tengo una nariz bastante sensible  y al principio fue muy difícil para mi soportar el olor a huevo podrido pero salir fue mucho mejor y estaba soleado...ah, y también fui a los saunas!

I went to this wine shop/vinoteka where you can do some wine tasting that used to be a chapel. Tiny but cute and nice staff. It is called the Borkápolna/Fui a una tienda de vino o vinoteka donde se puede hacer cata de vinos que fue anteriormente una capilla. Pequeñita pero bonita. Se llama la Borkápolna.

The ruin pubs is a must see in Budapest. I went to Instant, Art-Bar-Wood. Such a fascinating decor and really good atmosphere. It is a huge old building like others in its kind, turned into artistic drinking spots that resemble squats with a mix and match of furniture and music genres. This kind of bars are trendy in Budapest, but this bar in specific surprises you at every turn. The "backyard" courtyard is like a beer garden with various staircases leading to a labyrinth of rooms, some tiny, others large enough to contain other bars. Strange and beautiful art adorns some of the spaces ./ Algo que se debe hacer en Budapest es ir a los ruin pubs o bares en ruinas. Fui al Instant. La decoración es increíble y tiene buen ambiente. Es un edificio viejo gigante como los otros de su tipo. que se transformo en un punto para tomar con onda artística que se parece a las casas okupa con las mezcla de muebles y géneros musicales. Este tipo de bar están de moda en Budapest, pero este en especifico te sorprende a cada minuto. El patio es como un jardín para beber cervezas con varias escaleras que te llevan a un laberinto de cuartos, algunos pequeños y otros lo suficientemente grandes como para tener su propia barra adentro- Arte extraño pero también bonito adorna la mayoria de los espacios.

yo y el parsero. After a salsa club, Misha and I decided to go to Instant. We just loved the place.

Next day: Budapest Jazz Club. Free concerts, nice crowd. It´s a more adult kind of place and very fancy./ Al día siguiente: Budapest Jazz Club con conciertos gratis y gente chevere. Es más adulto y muy fancy.

My train to Bratislava. It was very difficult to get a ticket and people didnt know where the trains to Bratislava depart from. It was very complicated to buy a ticket cause people dont speak English at the station but I made it. 20euros for a return ticket is not bad at all if you consider that I was crossing borders.

My next post will be about Bratislava.../ Mi tren a Bratislava. Fue difícil comprar un ticket y la gente no sabia de donde salían los trenes. Fue muy complicado porque la gente no hablaba ingles pero lo logre. pague 20 euros por un ticket ida y vuelta, que no esta nada mal si se considera que cruce fronteras. Mi próximo post sera sobre Bratislava...
