Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings at the Ancienne Belgique

I went to the Ancienne Belgique to see Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings because my friend Wim invited me to join him and his friends. I was not a fan or anything and I had listened to a few songs before but since I´m more into some other genres I didnt think it was a big deal... but after seeing them live, I was converted! / Fui al Ancienne Belgique a ver a Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings porque mi amigo Wim me invitó. no era fan ni nada y había escuchado un par de canciones antes porque me gusta mas otro tipo de música así pero después de verla en vivo, me convertí!

Sharon is just an amazing singer with an outstanding stage presence ( as soon as she stepped out on stage I had goose bumps! ). She danced and sang non-stop for over 3 hours and the show was like a homage to soul and funk from the late 1960s to mid 1970s a la Motown, and her dance moves reminded me of Josephine Baker and even James Brown. / Sharon es una cantante increíble con una presencia en escena mas increíble aun (en cuanto salio al escenario se me pararon los pelos). Canto y bailo sin parar por mas de 3 horas y el show fue como un homenaje al soul y funk de finales de los 60 y mitad de los 70 a la Motown, y sus pasos de bailes me recuerdan a Josephine Baker e inclusive James Brown.

She kept cracking jokes all night, flirting with the guys in the audience and made a tribute to all the voices who had died recently (Etta, Whitney, Amy) and on top of that she was very humble and nice to everyone, she even took some time to sign autographs and pics with the fans /Estuvo toda la noche haciendo chistes y flirteando con los hombres del publico e hicieron un tributo a las voces que han muerto recientemente (Etta, Whitney, Amy) y encima se comporto muy humilde con la gente y firmo autógrafos y se tomo fotos con los fans.

The Oppressed in Liege

The Oppressed, for those who dont know them, is a Welsh anti-fascist Oi! band. The SHARP skinhead band has split and re-formed several times, but they re-formed in 2009, and continue performing today. They came to Liege in Belgium and I went with a group of friends from Ghent. It seems like people from different parts of Belgium went to La Zone to see them play. All I have to say is that they played really well and the atmosphere in the place was amazing. I had no clue that belgians were big fans of OI! Good company + great music + cheap drinks = awesome night. 

The Oppressed, para quienes no la conocen, es una banda Oi! galesa anti-fascista. La banda SHARP skinhead se ha separado y juntado varios veces, pero volvieron nuevamente en el 2009 y continúan tocando. Vinieron a Lieja en Bélgica y fui con un grupo de amigos de Gante. Parece que gente de distintas partes de Bélgica fueron a La Zone para verlos tocar. Sólo puedo decir que tocaron muy bien y que la energía en el lugar era increíble. No tenia idea que de los belgas eran fanáticos del Oi!. Buena compañía + buena música + tragos baratos = noche genial.

I saw Cop on Fire playing. Loved them, I even bought their record. Its a Belgian dub band / vi a los Cop on Fire tocando y me encantaron. Hasta compré el disco. Es una banda belga de dub. 

Here I am wearing my same ol´ sailor cardigan and sailor trousers and my swing shoes (not on the pic). I´ve noticed that I usually mix blue w red but in my defense the navy look is a classic ;) / Heme aquí usando otra vez el cardigan de marinero con los pantalones marineros y los zapatos de swing que no se ven en la foto. He notado que usualmente mezclo azul con rojo pero en mi defensa el look navy es un clásico ;)

I got to meet and chat with the band members and they were super nice and very talkative! Here´s a pic with them! / Puede conocer y hablar con los miembros de la bandas y fueron super agradables y muy conversadores. Aquí una foto con ellos!

and in the end I saw the man in black...Henry Rollins himself! I was sitting on the 5th row in an big auditorium and to my surprise; full house! the audience was predominantly white, male and 30 - 40 years old and there was I: short, brown and with my victory rolls eagerly awating for what he had to say / y al final vi al hombre de negro...Henry Rollins! Me senté en la 5ta fila en un auditorio grandisimo y para mi sorpresa: casa llena! la audiencia fue predominantemente masculina, blanca y de 30 a 40 años y ahí estaba yo: pequeñita, marroncita y con mis victory rolls esperando ansiosa por lo que el tenia que decir. 

The show did not dissapoint. The minute he went on the stage everyone smiled. He only had words to entertain us, he was against a plain background, under the spotlight,  fully dressed in black and shooting words as fast as he could. His striking energy lasted for over 3 hours but we, the audience, did not feel that the show lasted that long - I talked to some other people about it and they all agreed-. One can tell Punk still flows through his veins and a series of anecdotes from the Black Flag era and suggesting the Ramones + Pizza can solve any problems people may have were the evidence. He talked extensively about politics, the US government and his trips. As I said before, the world needs more people like him and he should keep on talking.../ El show no decepcionó. En cuanto salió al escenario todo el mundo sonrió. Sólo tenía palabras para entretenernos porque se paró en un escenario de un solo color, bajo la luz, vestido todo de negro y disparando palabras lo más rápido que pudo (sólo apto para gente con buen nivel de inglés). Su energía se mantuvo por más de 3 horas y nosotros, la audiencia no sentimos que el show duró tanto - hablé después con otra gente y estuvieron de acuerdo-. Uno se da cuenta que el Punk todavía corre por sus venas y una serie de anécdotas sobre la era Black Flag y la sugerencia de usar pizza y los Ramones para resolver cualquier problema fueron la evidencia. Habló extensivamente sobre política, el gobierno de USA y sus viajes. Como dije antes, el mundo necesita más gente como él y debería seguir hablando....

August was a 90s themed month for me with parties and gigs around my city. Old local bands got reunited like Diaclasa and Extorsion and 90s music everywhere - Agosto fue el mes de los 90 para mi con fiestas y eventos en mi ciudad por doquier. FRENTE DE IRA

Frente de Ira is a Venezuelan old school hardcore band that was started playing back in 2007. There have been quite a few changes when it comes to the name and band members but nowadays they are more cohesive and released an album. Not only I like their music for the sake of it, but they happen to be my friends too. With upcoming gigs in Colombia and Argentina, they decided to play in several places as some sort of farewell party and they went to my town and played in my favorite place: Living Bar.

Frente de Ira es una banda venezolana de Harcore vieja escuela que empezó a tocar en el 2007. Han habido unos cuantos cambios en lo que se refiere al nombre y a los miembros de la banda pero hoy en dia están mas cohesionados y lanzaron un album. No solo me gusta su música porque si, sino que también son mis amigos. Con tokes venideros en Colombia y Argentina, ellos decidieron tocar en varios lugar como parte de una casi fiesta de despedida -en plural- y fueron a mi ciudad y tocaron en mi lugar favorito: Living Bar

As i already mentioned, not much to do around here, so what we do to have fun is to get together with friends and drink. here are some shots from a metal-fueled weekend in my hometown plus some pics from the Gillmanfest that took place here. For those who dont know Paul Gillman is our local Ozzy and the Gillmanfest is our chance to see international bands for a very affordable price. 20 bolivares for the ticket? not bad
